Pile Of Unfinished Cabs-Soft

Description

Pile of cabs I've been working on to put in my new tumbler. It turns out that I had only made 1/4 lb, the tumbler manufacturer suggests 2 lbs (or 2/3 full -a lot of stones this size) plus filler media (ceramic 'pellets') as well as grit. This pile contains my softer stones, such as malachite, rhodochrosite, turquoise, opal, goldstone(actually a man-made glass), and fluorite(not shown-needs more work). The tumbler manufacturer suggests not to mix hard stones with softer ones, so I have a lot of cabs to make to fill this pile up to make at least a pound.
I am especially happy with how the yellow opal with white (?) on top came out. At first I thought that stone was junk, then I cut it in half, thickness-wise(hard with a bandsaw) which left me with this cab and an 'ok' slice on the opposite side. I got that opal because a customer asked if I had any yellow, I didn't. I really like the shade of yellow and its translucence. I have a bunch more and there'll be earrings and enhancers.

I may start selling finished cabochons someday, but maybe not, I don't know if I want to see my babies wrapped by strangers. I already have way more cabs/crystals than I can wrap if I go months without any lapidary work.

These are absolutely gorgeous.  :D  Is that malachite I see yonder?  But seriously- these are amazing.  You've already made a ton...
